GAMSTOP and self-exclusion explained

Published 27 October 2026Updated 27 October 2026By the GamCasual editorial team

GAMSTOP is the national online self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. Every online gambling operator licensed by the Gambling Commission must take part.

How it works

  1. Register at gamstop.co.uk.
  2. Choose how long to exclude yourself. The options are six months, one year or five years.
  3. Licensed operators check against GAMSTOP and must stop marketing to you and close or block accounts.

The service is free. Once the exclusion starts, you cannot end it early. When the period ends, you decide whether to renew it; check GAMSTOP for the current process.

What GAMSTOP does not do

  • It does not stop you using unlicensed sites. Do not use them: they offer no UK protections.
  • It does not cover land-based venues, which have their own schemes.
  • It does not address the reasons gambling became a problem. Talk to someone.

Other tools to combine with it

  • Operator tools: deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and reality checks on each site.
  • Blocking software: apps that block gambling sites and adverts on your devices.
  • Bank tools: many UK banks let you block gambling transactions on your account.
  • Support: the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free, confidential and open 24 hours. GamCare, GambleAware and BeGambleAware also offer advice and treatment.

When to consider it

Think about self-exclusion if you are betting more than you can afford, chasing losses, hiding gambling from people close to you, or feeling anxious or low about it. You do not need to have reached a crisis to use it.

If you are worried about someone else, you can talk to the helpline too. See also staying in control and our safer gambling page.

Frequently asked questions

Is GAMSTOP free?

Yes. It is a free service run independently of the gambling industry.

Does GAMSTOP cover every gambling site?

It covers online operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, all of which must take part. It does not cover sites licensed elsewhere, which UK customers should not use.

Can I change my mind during the exclusion?

No. The exclusion runs for the period you choose. Think about the period carefully, and ask for help if you are unsure.

Need support?
